John Hancock is a super-hero with emotional problems. These problems greatly bother Hancock, and cause him to live a half-sour life. On one hand, he saves the lives of others; on the other, he creates great destruction everywhere he goes, and has a crummy attitude towards everyone he meets. Hancock suffers from hate, neglect and loneliness. By the end of the movie, his internal conflicts dissolve, allowing him to live a better life.
Hancock is loved by few, and hated by many. Even for a physical super-hero, hate will take its toll. When 1 person loves you for every 500 who hate, a feeling of ostracism will likely arise. Hancock believed that every person in the world hated him, to which he became an alcoholic. The problem of hate coexists with neglect, and both are solved the same way: By someone who cares.
Along with hate, Hancock was neglected. It is easy for one to hate openly where everyone else hates as well. But to show love amongst a crowd of hate, is an act of compassion. Ray shows Hancock that there are people in the world who love him, and had complete faith that Hancock could change. John Hancock slowly gained confidence in his ability to change into a better person. As obstacles appeared, Hancock wanted to quit, but Ray was there to remind him of all the good he could do for others.
When are are lonely, the negative effects of other ailments are amplified. Being ‘The only one of his kind’, Hancock found it very difficult to get along with others. When Ray invited Hancock to his house, he met Mary and Aaron, 2 other people who greatly cared about him. Mary tells Hancock the story of who he is, and his feeling of loneliness gradually slips away. Although he is physically lonely at the end of the movie, the emotional presence of those who love Hancock keep his mental loneliness away.
Hancock is one the first movie super-heroes to suffer from mental ailments. With the help of others, he is able to shake off all feelings of hate, neglect and loneliness against him. In the end, it made his life more like a regular hero: happy, but never content.
