Major Payne – Don’t Hide your Emotions

icon1 Posted by Josh Lipovetsky in Film Analysis on 11 13th, 2008 | Discuss this Analysis with Me?

The character of Major Payne is very reserved emotionally. This is due to his expansive military background. When you are reserved, other people will have a tendency to dislike you. However, Payne used other methods to gain the respect, and ultimately, the love from his young cadets.

Major Payne always tried to look tough in front of others (and himself). When Tiger tried to hug him, he felt very awkward. Payne was so concerned with his ‘tough guy’ military image, that is almost drove him away from his students; who he loved. Although Payne still hid his emotions by the end of the movie, he ultimately learned how to be a better and more caring person.

When the kids first met Major Payne, they disliked him. They even attempted to force him out of the commanding position. After the trophy challenge, the kids realized that Payne only wanted what was best for them, and to transform them into winners. Unfortunately, due to the hiding of his emotions, this process was greatly delayed. Had Payne expressed his genuine emotions, it would not have taken such a long time to gain the respect of the kids.

Major Payne shows the value of being emotionally responsible, and the pros and cons of expressing your emotions. Ultimately, it is always better to let others know how you feel, and who you really are. It will pay off in the long run.
