Pan’s Labyrinth – Escaping Your Situation

Sometimes our everyday lives can get hectic; overrun by stress, chaos, or violence. In Ofelia’s case, escape may seem like the most reasonable solution, and if you have imagination as vivid as Ofelia, it may be a temporary solution to your problems. However, since escape is only a temporary solution, you will eventually have to face your problems head-on to get rid of them.

In Pan’s Labyrinth, Ofelia created an imaginary world of creatures to escape from an ongoing Civil War battle in Spain. Her mother is also sick, and Ofelia imagines a magic cure method which actually helps the health of her mom. Everything happens in her head, but with strong willpower, Ofelia is able to make certain events into reality. It is questionable if things like this can happen in real life, but it never hurts to imagine all of your problems being vanquished in a world under your own power. The fairies represented Ofelia’s helpers, providing her with the motivation necessary to accomplish things. The Faun provided Ofelia with information about the tasks which she needed to complete in order to reach her “final” escape. Although a very dark-themed movie, Ofelia received her wish in the end. To live in her enchanted/imaginary world forever.

Guillermo del Toro offers his opinion of escape in “Pan’s Labyrinth”. If escaping into your own world works for you, then by all means do it. However, as long as we live, we must eventually tackle our problems to continue living our lives.
