Peaceful Warrior is an inspiring movie which teaches us to listen to our spirit guides, because they will always lead us in the right direction. Socrates was a physical manifestation of Dan Millmans spirit guide. Sensing that Dan was headed in a bad direction, Socrates taught his philosophy to Dan. Some of the lessons that are taught throughout the film are living in the present moment, and doing what you love most.
Socrates wanted to teach Dan to ‘clean out the garbage’ from his mind, and become inclined to live in the present moment. For example, gloating is being stuck in your past. Dreaming to win a gold medal is being in the future. Peaceful Warrior exhibits, that in order to be in the moment, you must pay attention to everything around you. There are beautiful sights and sounds all around you. If you can learn to live in the present moment, you will learn to experience happiness. After all, “happiness is found in the journey, not the destination”. If you can only intend to achieve your future goals, you may tell yourself: “If only I could have X, I will finally be happy!”. Peaceful Warrior shows that this is not the mindset to experience happiness. Become fully aware of life’s passing moments, and you will be on your way to happiness.
Dan’s main joy in life was Gymnastics, his outlet for living in the present moment. All his life, Dan’s main goal was to win a Gold Medal in the Olympics. But after suffering a horrible motorcycle crash, his mindset must change with it. Along with Socrates help, Dan continues to practice his love in life, even with a physical handicap. Along with being in the present moment, doing what you love is another gateway to happiness. Dan eventually overcame his physical ailment, and compete in the Olympic qualifiers. If his spirit guide hadn’t been there to help him, Dan might have given up on his love in life. Do what you love, and the happiness will follow.
How do we find our own spirit guides? They might not be clearly seen, or have a large physical presence like Socrates. But they can be the most important aspect to improving our lives. You can creatively visualize your spirit guide in your mind, and be surprised at some of the advice you receive. If you have trouble with visualizing, you can still find your guide in the physical form. Dedicate a specific object/person as your spirit guide. Upon seeing them/it, think of how you can improve your life, and listen to the advice that flows in your mind. It is all advice from your spirit guide, doing what they can to provide your gateway to happiness!
